Are My Vagina Lips Normal?

Yes, your vagina lips are completely normal. March 16th marked Lips Appreciation Day where we celebrate our lips and how they are individual to all of us and our smiles. Here at Secret Whispers we think there’s another set of lips that needs some appreciation, and we are crowing the 24th of March as #Ladylipsappreciationday. Let’s give our labia some love

Is my vagina normal?

The simple answer is - YES! Our society is so obsessed with the concept of ‘normal’, but what does it really mean anyway? Normal is different for everyone and the same goes for labia and vulvas. Labia come in in all different shapes, colours and sizes.

Some peoples labia can be large or others with one lip bigger than the other. Some labia are darker in colour with other people having labia that are much lighter in colour. Our lady lips have texture and ripples, and all of it is normal. As long as you and your vagina are healthy, what you’ve got down there is normal.

The mainstream media and pornography have been pedalling the idea that the only acceptable or normal type of labia for someone to have are small, smooth and symmetrical, otherwise known as “The Barbie Look”.

Not only is the "barbie look" harmful to women’s self-esteem and confidence, it’s also a flat-out lie.

How to Tell if Something is Wrong Down There

Labia can cause people issues or discomfort. Some women with larger labia might find they rub on clothes or get in the way of sporting activity like riding a bike. If your labia is causing these sort of issues for you, you should book an appointment with your doctor and discuss your concerns. The general rule or thumb with problems down there is “has there been a recent change?”. This might mean a new smell or a new itch that’s started to bother you or redness and irritation that’s started in the last few days.

Whatever it might be, book an appointment and get it checked out.

Labia Cosmetic Surgery (Labiaplasty)

A labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure that’s performed on the labia to change the way they look. This usually means making them smaller or more symmetrical. This is done by scalpel or more recently with specialist lasers. Labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation procedures have seen a surge in popularity in the last few years.

Celebs like Gemma Collins have boasted about their “designer vaginas” and the rest of us want a piece of the action. In the UK a labiaplasty procedure will set you back anywhere from £2,000 to £4,000, plus the cost of any consultations or follow up care that isn’t included in the procedure cost.

A full recovery can take months, and during this time bruising and swelling can occur and this can make it painful to sit or pee. Sex and physical activity should be avoided for 6 to 12 weeks to avoid antagonising the sensitive region. Like with any surgical procedure, labiaplastys can go wrong and result in some nasty symptoms like bleeding, infection, scarring and reduced sensitivity in the genitals.

Why Would Anyone Even Want to do That to Themselves?

Our society expects women to have a picture perfect vagina, like those seen in tiny string bikinis on Instagram or magazines. This places an insecurity on many women that their vagina is not normal.

Expectations and pressures from media or comments made by partners top the charts for the reasons women seek out these procedures.

Ladies - your vagina, your labia is normal. We are all unique.

However, some women have a medical reason for changing their labia through surgery. Some want a labiaplasty because their large labia cause physical discomfort when wearing tight clothing or when doing sports.

If you’re embarrassed about the way you look down there and are considering a surgery like a labiaplasty, it might be worth seeking out a counsellor or therapist first to truly explore why you want this type of procedure. Cosmetic surgery isn’t a magic cure to solve all your insecurities and there’s no guarantees that you’ll get the results you want. Practicing self-love is vitally important and something we should make a part of our daily routines.
